ART DECO FURNITURE: A LELEU MASTERPIECE

This example of a Jules Leleu sideboard encompasses the best of Art Deco inlaid detailing with the forward interpretations of classical forms. Art Deco furniture made toward the end of that period looked at form, which we now see in the classic 1940s furniture design.

Leleu's recognition as an Art Deco designer was apparent in the early stages of the 1920s. His pieces appeared to have a less graceful form and were not as sophisticated as his later work. The style was heavier and less fluid; however these early designs employed elegant bronze trim with exotic wood veneers. Inlaid motifs were used in a sparing manner; with simple geometric detailing add to give the appearance of the Art Deco form. These elements would be embellished and continued to be a trademark of Leleu's work, which was important for the firm's ability to secure commissions that required a refined and chic d?cor.

This French Art Deco sideboard designed and made by Leleu has all the inherent qualities of a masterpiece by Leleu. The magnificent pearl and ebony inlay against the beautiful palisander wood veneer plays off the stunning Pierre Dunand lacquered top. The inlaid flowers and butterfly designed 2 center doors expands to more delicate and touches of small flowers on the outer 2 doors. With beautiful, delicate bronze trim and sabot feet, the shape of this piece is made to appear simplified, but well defined.

Behind the doors of the cabinet hides a magnificent solid sycamore, fully functioning interior. The detailing of this interior includes a palisander wood veneer to the edge of all the shelves and fully veneered backs to the doors. Also, the original ivory signature plaque is inlaid in the upper corner of the front right door's interior.

This style was employed by Leleu in may other pieces of furniture for the dining room. Similar inlaid designs can be seen in examples of dining tables and smaller commodes. It could be assumed that this piece was part of a commission for an entire dining room suite.

However, one important aspect of the design of this piece is the extraordinary scale and size of the piece. At a length of 8?', this makes the sideboard an unusually large and grand dimension. To create such an uncommonly large piece of furniture required special consideration to the proportions of its form. However the design of the room for which the piece was made clearly influenced why this was remarkable size was requisite.

Leleu, as one of the great Art Deco furniture designers was also very successful in the post Art Deco style. As Leleu's designs evolved in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, he kept with the modernist trends of sleeker forms and use of modern materials such as steel and plastics. However, his designs have always maintained an international aspect of fashion and fashion. The scale and quality of this extraordinary piece of furniture has endowed its singular proportional form as a quintessential example of furniture design in the 20th Century.

For the past 2 years, my wife has been after me to get her a Princess phone. After 2 years of not taking the hint, I finally broke down and ordered her a pink princess phone. I waited until the 13th of December to order the phone, with hopes that it would get here before Christmas. The estimated delivery date that I was sent was the 24th of December, just in the "Nick" of time. It actually came on the 20th, so I didn't have to sweat after all. After I gave it to my wife, I was worried that it wouldn't be what she wanted. Boy was I wrong. I guess she had wanted one of these for a long time, because she instantly plugged it up and started using it.

Customer Review: Unique features and Excellent picture quality

I just got my DTV coupon card from Uncle Sam. No way I'm going to buy a new HD TV set with the crummy shows on broadcast TV today. I shopped around for a good sturdy looking DTV converter box. This unit looks way better and has more features than the RCA box. It's easy to hook up. I hooked mine to a 5 year old JVC 27" I'art flatscreen CRT tv. You plug the antenna into the Zenith box, then hook the box to your TV using the COAX cable or Composite cables if your TV has them. Mine did so that's the way I hooked it up. Zentith provides all the cables you need. That's nice of them.

Be sure to set your TV to channel 3 or 4 if you use the COAX. Using the composite cables I just selected Video 2 on my TV set remote and the DTV box setup menu came up. Set up was quick and easy using auto channel scan and I was enjoying Digital TV in about 5 minutes!

Reception was 200% better than analog over the air. Looks like cable or satellite! You'll see a big improvement in the old set because most modern TVs can do 525 lines of resolution. Analog broadcast could never touch that, so while it's not "HD" you won't mind since the picture and reception is far better.

The bad news; You will see a letterbox image on many DTV channels! SO it may seem like your nice 27" TV just shrunk to 20". But the Zenith has a great ZOOM button which allows you to fill your screen once again. Granted sides of the picture will be chopped off, but at least Zenith put this useful feature in. Bad news again is that you have to Re-Zoom each time you change channels. But that's NOT the Converter box's fault. It seems TV stations are all over the place right now with picture sizes and shapes. Yeah, they call it "progress" in Washington D.C.

Tuning DTV is not like analog; the signal just cuts out or breaks up, which is hardly an improvement in my book. But the Zenith has a button on the remote to check the Signal Strength with a Graph bar and Audible sound. So it's easier to adjust your antenna to get better reception even if you can't see the set-COOL! You also have access to onscreen program guides. You can even surf through and see what's on other channels using the textbox button for GUIDE. The remote is really good for a unit this cheap, and has features found on many satellite boxes costing 3X as much.

There is an option to control your TV set using the remote, but be aware it only controls BASIC TV functions; turn it on or off, mute, and that's about it. You still need your TV's remote. The DTV box has a red "Eye" on the front when turned off and blue when switched on. That makes it easy to tell if it's powered up. The Box is small enough to sit on top of most TVs and not take up a lot of space. It's silent too, no bizarre high pitch whine like my cable box used to make.

If you live in a major city get ready for more channels. My wonderful PBS station, KETC has FOUR DTV stations now. I'm grateful for that because one more network reality show and I'll pull an Elvis on my poor TV!

The only thing I wish this box did was allow an S Video or component video output. I bet the signal would look even better. I must say the DTV picture quality is beautiful. It's like watching everything on DVD. I recommend this Zenith box to all of my friends and family who refuse to rush out and buy a $2000 Plasma or LCD TV. This box will make your old set look new again, plus has some really nifty features for the Techno-Geek like me.

Customer Review: Easy to set up and it works well

I wondered whether I needed a standard DTV box (such as the Zenith) for my analog TV or if I needed a more expensive HDTV box. The sales guy noted that to convert an analog TV, only the standard box is needed. The difference between DTV and HDTV is the resolution, and analog cannot take advantage of the higher resolution of HDTV, according to the sales guy.

I had this unit working within 5 minutes. I live in a major city, and it picks up at least 3x the number of channels as analog TV. The remote that comes with the box also can control the TV, which is very convenient. Sometimes the signal is a little choppy (either picture or sound is garbled), but this may be a function of digital television generally.

This is a nice box.

I purchased these 24 inch speaker stands as part of a small home office audio system I was putting together with inexpensive vintage components found on ebay. The Paradigm titan speakers (original version) were a bit bass-heavy on the floor. The Sanus floor stands improved the sound dramatically. The stands assembled easily and precisely and look quite good. I have them on a hardwood floor without the carpet spikes that are included. They are stable and solid. An excellent value.
